STRIPPING TECHNIQUES Preparation Before actually stripping the floor it is a wise idea to assemble all the proper tools and equipment required. Dust mop or sweep floor area to be stripped, removing all furniture, equipment and other moveable objects. Place cones or signs to warn of area being stripped. Safe Procedures As with any chemical use, ensure your crew is trained and briefed on the equipment they are using. Long sleeve pants, shirts and chemical resistant gloves should be worn, in addition to goggles or faceshields in the event of splashed chemicals. Technique Mix stripping solution according to manufacturers’ instructions. Wet mop the diluted stripper over floor area, allowing time for stripper to penetrate. Do not allow stripper to completely dry on floor. If this should occur, re-apply stripper and wait ten minutes. Once the floor begins drying, scrub with a floor machine equipped with a stripping pad or brush. Use sweeping strokes, first in one direction then reverse to ensure total coverage. Strip floor in stages so areas do not have time to completely dry. To remove old finish from corners, edges and baseboards, use a hand-scrubbing pad or edge brush with a stripping pad. Remove solutions with a floor squeegee then check to determine if all finish has been removed. This can be done by scraping area with a putty knife or similiar device. If a bluish white jelly substance appears, the finish has not been completely removed and your crew must re-apply stripper. When finish has been completely taken up, remove stripper solution with a wet/dry vacuum or automatic scrubber. Next, clean floor with wet mops, remove with wet/dry vacuum and repeat rinse process. To touch up, mop area with a clean mophead, erasing any stroke marks on floor. Remove and clean all equipment and mops. Once floor area is clean your crew is ready for the finishing process. |
